Improving Governance of the SDGs Through Improved Mechanisms for Engagement of the Major Groups

PAIRVI have organized a side event on Improving Governance of the SDGs through Improved Mechanism for Engagement of the Major Groups on 2nd July 2014, at HLPF 2. The unique positioning of the HLPF between the UNGA and the ECOSOC might have adverse implications for MGs engagement. The side event discussed What MGs engagement mechanism will best suit the interests of the HLPF and will be helpful in effective governance of the SDGs.

An Interaction with Pablo Solon on Climate Change and Sustainable Development

Speaking on the occasion, Pablo Solon, Director, Focus on the Global South and Former Lead Negotiator of Bolivia in UNFCCC negotiations, said that climate change is a systemic problem rather than an environmental problem brought about by the consumeristic culture of the capitalist society. If we want to limit increase in temperature then we need to cut down our consumption pattern and, subsequently, burn only one-third of the known fossil fuels. He, however, feared that the new convention that shall be signed in Paris in 2015 shall be more based on 'pledges' than 'commitments' and would also open too many new markets for private sector to invest.

State Consultation on Climate Change and Disaster, Uttarakhand

A State Consultation was organized with the objective of initiating discussion on the strategy  for engaging further with the SAPCC and disasters in Uttarakhand and releasing an interim report on a assessment on the loss and damage incurred in the region. Participants in the consultation included many NGOs, media representatives, CSO representatives from Nepal. Mr. Hemesh Kharkwal, Parliamentary Secretary, Environment and Forests, Government of Uttarakhand, was the chief guest at the occasion. He encouraged civil society endeavors and reaffirmed inclusion of any important recommendation to government policies. He also insured that attempts would be made in rehabilitating the flood-ravaged population in the same region rather to far –flunked plains.

State Consultation on Bihar Action Plan on Climate Change

State Consultation on Bihar Action Plan on Climate Change (BAPCC) was organized at Patna, Bihar on 14th December 2013 with the objective of sharing reflections on the current draft of the action plan. the consultation witnessed the presence of a wide range of stakeholders from government officials, bureaucrats, scientists involved in drafting the BAPCC to experts from various sectors, representatives of local and national NGOs, women farmers, and localities. Also present at the occasion was Mr. Devesh Chandra, MLC from JD (U) who shared his perception on the changing climate pattern in Bihar and assured taking the discussion further to the Assembly. Mr. Vijoy Prakash, Principal Secretary, Planning Commission, appreciated the efforts, thus, undertaken at promoting public awareness of environmental issues and suggested that now that the action plan has already been drafted, concerns in implementation needs to be addressed.

Consultation on Climate Disaster and Farmers' Crises in Uttarakhand

The meeting dealt with the problems in agriculture being faced by the small farmers in the flood ravaged regions of Uttarakhand and possible support that could be extended to them with support from  local organizations and government. While the Indian government is focusing on rescue and relief operations, the plight of farmers has been largely ignored. Also present for the meeting was Mr. Naresh Sirohi, National Vice President of BJP Kishan Morcha, Working Committee. Mr. Sirohi requested government / people from other states to donate livestock to families hit by the floods in Uttarakhand. He also expressed need to ensure that local seeds are used for cultivating crops in future instead of hybrid ones.
