5th Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD)

The APFSD’s 5th edition was organized by ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific during 28th to 30th March at UN Conference Centre (UNCC) Bangkok. The APFSD is regional preparatory meeting for the HLPF, which will take place during 8th to 20th July at UN headquarters at New York. The HLPF will be held on theme “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies. The goals under review are SDG6, SDG7, SDG11, SDG12, SDG15 and SDG17. More than 750 delegates discussed regional perspective on the follow up and review of the Agenda 2030. Sh Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, NitiAyog and LevanDavitashivili, Minister, Fiji were appointed Co-Chair of the APFSD5. Ajay participated in the APFSD5, and besides curating a number of constituency statements, he spoke on a panel on Goal 12 (Sustainable and consumption and production) organized by UNESCAP along with Minister from Bhutan and Chair of the Switch-Asia, who were the other panelists.

National Consultation on Sustainability and Climate; Exploring Gender and Development Praxes

PAIRVI, CECOEDECON and BCPH collective organized the National Consultation as prep meeting for the CSW and took this opportunity also to reflect on the status of the SDGs and Paris Agreement. Ms. UshaPunia, former Minister, Rajasthan, Ms. NeelamGorhe, Chief Whip and MLC, Maharashtra Legislative Council, Mr. Fons van der Valden, Context, Netherlands, Mr. Shyam Chandra, University of Iowa, Ms. AparnaSahay, Chairperson PAIRVI, Mr. Sunil Jacob, UNFPA Rajasthan participated in the Consultation. The Consultation underlined that lot of efforts need to be put in to build pressure on the government to take effective and meaningful policies and programmes. In the context of the CSW, the speakers highlighted that though status of women has improved generally, there are some areas where progress is required (women’s role in the legislatures, taking the benefits of the IT to women, recognizing patriarchy and oppression as a state policy.

National Consultation on role and responsibility of big technology in sustainable and inclusive development

The Consultation started with the welcome by Mr. Ajay Jha. He put forth the objective of the consultation to discuss the state of play of big technology related to climate change, sustainable development, agriculture and food systems at the global level.

National Consultation on Draft National SDGs Indicators

6th April 2017, Delhi
The consultation was aimed to provide feedback on the draft national Indicators developed by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. More than 70 organizations attended and provided feedback/recommendations on indicators on all SDGs. Representative of the Niti Aayog, RIS, NIPFP and all major organizations working on the SDGs besides partners from 10 states attended the Consultation. Final comments from around 60 organizations were also compiled and submitted to Niti Aayog.
 

Consultation on Climate Crisis and Implementing SDGs in South Asia

15th Aug, Kathmandu
 
PAIRVI along with SADED Nepal, SADED India, Nepal youth forum & other groups organized a round table consultation on "Climate crisis and Implementing SDGs in South-Asia." The daylong meeting was held in Padmakanya College, Kathmandu. About 40 people from a wide section of Nepalese society, including senior government functionaries, ex planning commission people, academics, CSOs, teachers, political party activists student unions etc.

Taking Sustainable Development and Climate Agenda Post 2015

The Consultation was organized in collaboration with BCPH, Stree Aadhar Kendra and Development Support Team. It was organized with an aim to bring convergence of ideas on what lies ahead for the climate and development agenda in 2016 and beyond. Mr. Prakash Javdekar, Minister, MOEF &CC has attended the meeting. The Consultation also explored how to engage with the national and regional agenda without forgetting the need to further shrill the demands of equity, justice and end to poverty and hunger globally.

Pre CoP Consultation – Climate Conundrum and the Paris Paradox

CoP Consultation ‘Climate Conundrum and the Paris Paradox’ was organized by Beyond Copenhagen in collaboration with Oxfam India, INECC and AIWC in which Ashok Lavasa, Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), said that India has put up a very ambitious INDC which has been appreciated by the global community. 

 

South Asian Workshop on Concerns and Collaborative Actions; SDGs Summit, Paris CoP and Beyond

4th – 6th September 2015, Kathmandu, Nepal

SDG’s Summit, Paris COP and Beyond, South Asia Workshop on Concerns and Collaborative Action  was held from 4th to 6th September 2015, in Kathmandu, Nepal. It was organized by Beyond Copenhagen in collaboration with equitybd. The meeting was organized with an aim to bring all the South Asian Nation’s under one umbrella to discuss the sustainable development issues of the region and have common understanding and have common voice in the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference to be held in Paris in December 2015. Delegates from Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and other countries, participated in the Workshop and come up with a common pattern.

3rd International Conference on Financing for Development

13-16 July 2015, Addis Ababa
 
In the 3rd Conference on Financing for Development, Indian state minister for finance Mr. Jayant Sinha expressed deep disappointment over the Conference not taking up the issue of an intergovernmental tax body, which India espoused strongly on behalf of the G-77. The event discuss how sustainable development goals, which have high priority on the post 2015 development agenda of the United Nations can be financed. The conference’s outcome document — better known as the Addis Ababa Action Agenda — represents the world’s plan to implement and finance the new post-2015 development agenda. And although it expresses global support for an array of measures aimed at helping developing countries achieve self-reliance and sustainable economic transformation by raising domestic revenues and attracting private finance, it lacks the teeth needed to scale up existing resources and draw increased official aid from traditional donors. During this Ajay Jha participated in a number of side events on behalf of BCPH and expressed its views on Financing for Development.
 

Nationalizing the Sustainable Development Goals: Economic, Social & Environmental Sustainability in Western India

6-7 July 2015, Ahmedabad
 
The consultation was organized in collaboration with IPPF, TWN, Landesa, FPA India and other civil society organizations from across the country. Mr. Shaktisinh Gohil, Congress, Dr. Kirit Solanki, BJP MP and Mr. Suresh Mehta Former CM participated in the event along with some other regional and national NGOs, experts, and academicians etc. Mr Gohli said that for sustainable development goals to be achieved, the gap between the haves and have-nots must be reduced. Mr. Mehta said that sustainable development was not possible when the laws are being bent to favour a few. Civil society groups also highlighted their views on sustainable development and expressed their concerns over the way issues are being addressed in the Sustainable Development Goals.

It seeks to enhance peoples understanding on sustainable development so that they can be partners in development and analyze policies, programmes and actions. It also engages with UN agencies working on sustainable development and environment including United Nations General Assembly, High Level Political Forum on SDGs, United Nations Environment, and UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. PAIRVI is an active member of the Asia Pacific Regional CSOs Engagement Mechanism on Agenda 2030.
