Participation in Meeting with ECOSOC President on behalf of AP-RCEM

30th June 2015, The HLPF, New York

Ajay Jha, representing BCPH, presented the statement on behalf of the Asia Pacific Regional CSOs Engagement Mechanism. The APRCEM’s main guiding force is a call for development justice, which demands five transformative shifts; redistributive justice, economic justice, social and gender justice, environmental justice and accountability to the people. The APRCEM believes that the post 2015 agenda, perhaps for the first time, offers the UN and the HLPF an opportunity to address systemic failures and meaningfully integrate economic, social and environmental objectives of the development.

State Consultation on Sustainable Development Goals and Dalits

30th May 2015, Patna

A Consultation on Sustainable Development Goals and Dalits was organized in Patna on 30th May 2015. The consultation witnessed presence of more than 50 participants across the state which includes different stakeholders like Dalit activists, leaders, academicians and civil society organizations. They were briefed about the global debate of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainable development was discussed in the context of Dalits and their issues. Concerns were expressed on the lack of Dalits issues and devoid of Dalits Human Rights in the whole Sustainable Development Goals.

15–20 May 2015, Bangkok

Ajay K Jha participated in the Asia Pacific CSO Forum on Sustainable Development organized by UNESCAP and APWLD. He emphasized the need for a robust review and accountability mechanism at regional level through his interventions and presentations.

Participation in 4th Negotiating Session for the Post-2015 Development Agenda

20–24 April 2015

Ajay K Jha on behalf of CECOEDECON and BCPH participated in the April session of post 2015 in New York. The statement includes the concerns on agriculture and food security. While, the focus given to small-scale farmers in Goal 2 of SDGs is reflected in the FfD zero draft, the major concern is the primacy given to private finance and treating private finance from farmers at par with institutional private finance; as both have entirely different purposes and objectives. While agriculture may be the biggest private enterprise and is likely to remain so in future, that by itself does not reduce the importance of increasing public investments and better aid in agriculture. The report of the High Level Task Force on Global Cooperation emphasizes that while 90% of the private investment in agriculture remains clustered in food and beverages processing and marketing and only 5% of the FDI in agriculture goes to LMICs and 4% to the LICs.

Regional Consultation for East & North East India; Sustainable Development Goals – India Perspective

1st& 2nd April, 2015, Kolkata

Regional Consultation for North and East India was organized on Sustainable Development Goals in collaboration with IPPF, FPA India, CINI, Landesa and TWN India. The consultation was attended by Government Authorities, Civil Society Organizations, Academic Institutions, Research Organizations and other stakeholders from eight Eastern and North-eastern States of India.

Chhattisgarh State Consultation on Nationalizing Sustainable Development Goals

21-22 February 2015, Raipur

More than 200 farmers and elected representatives of the local bodies participated in the Consultation on Nationalizing Sustainable Development Goals. The Consultation also witnessed the participation of Sh Ajay Chandrakar, Minister Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Parliamentary Affairs, Tourism, Sh Amar Aggrawal, Minister Urban Administration, Sh Chandrashekhar Sahu, former Minister & MP, Sh SC Behar, former Chief Secretary, Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Rajlakshmi, Sr. Scientist from MSSRF, Sh Anand Sharma, Convener, Chhattisgarh Krishak Biradari. The Consultation discussed the SDGs proposal of the Open Working Group. While it reflected on the proposal, it found it unambitious and incapable of providing sustainable and inclusive development. The Consultation also reflected on the orientation of development in the country and the state. Lack of decentralized planning and role of people in the planning, unabated degradation and exploitation of the natural resources, inadequate support to farmers and agriculture, lack of dignity in agriculture, feminization of agriculture etc. were voiced as the main concerns. The main outcome of the Consultation was to undertake climate change resilient planning in 100 villages/blocks by the participants and organizers with the support of the elected representatives of the local bodies (Municipal Bodies and Gram Panchayats) and state government.

Farmers Training Workshop, Uttar Pradesh

7-8 November 2014

A two-day training workshop was organized for small and marginal farmers in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh around the theme ‘Climate Change and Agriculture’. The workshop was organized to share information on changing climate pattern and future climate scenario of Eastern UP, to train farmers to access local/regional weather info to plan their agricultural practices accordingly and to build resilience of farmers in changing climate by sharing innovative farming practices. The experts familiarized the farmers with the causes of climate change, its process, and impact around the world and linked the topic to agriculture. Dr. Sheo Shankar Verma from Gorakhpur University, said that climate change has also increased incidences of damage to crops, soil erosion, pest infestation etc. Even the quality of crop produced has been impacted as movement from field to storage and transportation to the market is dependent on the prevailing weather. It is therefore very important for farmers to know daily, seasonal, and annual variations that play a vital role in crop response and survival. During agriculture adaptation session farmers were trained on Soil Management and Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

Nationalizing Sustainable Development Debate, Regional Consultation-East

20-21 October 2014

A two-day consultation on Nationalizing Sustainable Development Debate was organized at DNS Institute of Cooperative Management, Patna on 20th – 21st October 2014 by Beyond Copenhagen, CECOEDECON, PAIRVI, and Nidan. The Consultation was a follow up of the National Consultation held on 21st and 22nd August at Delhi, which mandated the Campaign to organize regional and state consultations on the issue. The consultation was aimed to take the sustainable development debate into public domain and discuss the issues at local level. The objective of the consultation was to give Feedback to global negotiation, evolving a set of National SDGs, Discussing local issues of un-sustainability and Discussion on alternatives. Discussants across the states prioritized some important issues which need to be taken into the account.

National Consultation on Climate Change and Sustainable Development

6th September 2014, Bhopal

PAIRVI and Beyond Copenhagen organized a national consultation on climate change and sustainable development in collaboration of EPCo and MPCOST, GoMP on 6th September 2014. The objective of the consultation was to arrive at a national consensus with regard to India’s position on climate change and sustainable development (and trade/ WTO) including its stance and approach on these issues in international negotiations. The Consultation attracted the highest political attention and had the attendance of the Chief Minister along with many other relevant ministers (viz. housing, urban development and forests, water, transport, science and technology etc.) along with bureaucrats from several departments.

Nationalizing Sustainable Development Debate

21st - 22nd August 2014, New Delhi

The Consultation titled "Nationalizing Sustainable Development Debate" was organized by PAIRVI in collaboration with other organizations. The Consultation was attended by over 100 NGOs from 16 states of India. Indian CSOs rejected the draft SDGs released by the United Nations' Open Working Group. In a Consultation scores of NGOs concluded that the SDGs will not help either sustainability or development as they are set within the same framework that caused the problem. They lamented the lack of ambition and genuine efforts in the process, and emphasized that the SDGs process do not aim at going to the crux of the problem in looking for the solution and therefore, in their present shape are unlikely to address the major global challenges and crises of economy, food, fuel and climate.

It seeks to enhance peoples understanding on sustainable development so that they can be partners in development and analyze policies, programmes and actions. It also engages with UN agencies working on sustainable development and environment including United Nations General Assembly, High Level Political Forum on SDGs, United Nations Environment, and UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. PAIRVI is an active member of the Asia Pacific Regional CSOs Engagement Mechanism on Agenda 2030.
