Side Event at HLPF2

PAIRVI have organized a side event on Improving Governance of the SDGs through Improved Mechanism for Engagement of the Major Groups on 2nd July 2014, at HLPF 2. The unique positioning of the HLPF between the UNGA and the ECOSOC might have adverse implications for MGs engagement. The side event discussed What MGs engagement mechanism will best suit the interests of the HLPF and will be helpful in effective governance of the SDGs.
An Interaction with Pablo Solon on Climate Change and Sustainable Development

Speaking on the occasion, Pablo Solon, Director, Focus on the Global South and Former Lead Negotiator of Bolivia in UNFCCC negotiations, said that climate change is a systemic problem rather than an environmental problem brought about by the consumeristic culture of the capitalist society. If we want to limit increase in temperature then we need to cut down our consumption pattern and, subsequently, burn only one-third of the known fossil fuels. He, however, feared that the new convention that shall be signed in Paris in 2015 shall be more based on 'pledges' than 'commitments' and would also open too many new markets for private sector to invest.
Open Discussion on CBD COP 11

This meeting of various civil society groups - either active or preparing to be so, in different areas of people’s concerns about biological diversity and livelihoods, was called upon to discuss the overarching concerns of not only loss of biodiversity but also of increased, state assisted systematic transfer of control over biodiversity, food productions systems and natural resources from communities to private entities in the name of regulation, conservation and promotion. India as a host of the eleventh COP of Convention on Biological diversity should not only showcase its efforts in organizing CBD COP but also addressing these critical concerns. The discussion aimed to connect with organizations and networks participating in COP and to explore what synergies and convergence can be created not only in terms of participation at CBD COP but also as a long term and sustained engagement with the issue, institutions and state.
Media Consultation on Sustainable Development and Rio+20

The programme began with the welcome address and brief background of Rio, 1992, by Om Thanvi, Editor, Jansatta. He raised an important question of unity among the developing countries, i.e., the differences and divide came up in Durban. He highlighted that the whole world is divided on the issue of recent environmental crisis and even developed countries, known for their strong bonding and collective representation, have different stands to address their own concerns and interests.
National Consultation: Sustainable Development: National and Global Priorities for Rio+20

The National Consultation was organized with a view to bring in multiple stakeholders, persons and institutions to build an understanding on the sustainable development agenda and chart out a distinct road map to Rio+20.
