A stakeholder consultation on strengthening Village Level Child Protection Committees (VLCPCs) was organized at Dehri-on-Sone on 17 December, with participation from 30 stakeholders, including PRI representatives, lawyers, journalists, Child Welfare Committee members, and social activists. The discussion highlighted the growing concerns around child trafficking, the limitations of rescue-centric approaches, and the weak functioning of VLCPCs due to administrative apathy and lack of training at the grassroots level. Speakers emphasized that effective child protection requires strong village-level prevention mechanisms rather than reliance only on post-facto rescue. The Chief Guest, MLA Mr. Sonu Singh, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to child rights and appreciated civil society efforts in this area. Stakeholders collectively called for mandatory training of VLCPC members, regular meetings and reporting, community monitoring of vulnerable children and migrating families, and active involvement of local institutions and frontline workers. The meeting concluded with a shared consensus on the urgent need to revitalize VLCPCs as the first line of defense for child protection.
