UN RC, India conducted a country analysis on 4th August, in which all major organizations working with the UN were invited. Ajay K Jha, shared major development, climate change and sustainability concerns. The UNRC will develop a country plan based on the inputs received in the meeting.
Nature for Food systems is one of the 7 clusters (building blocks to facilitate UNEA theme, Actions for nature to achieve SDGs) organized by the UNEP towards the preparation of the UNEA 5.2, which will take place (virtually/hybrid/in person) in February, 2022. Ajay K Jha, Regional Facilitator is leading the Food Systems Cluster along with Dr. Angela Wright (World Farmers’ Organization) and Wali Haider (Farmers Major Group). A working group has been set up for taking forward the work of this cluster and had several meetings. A draft concept note has been finalized. A global consultation to will be held in middle of September. Preparatory Meetings were held on 18th and 22nd June and 29th July.
We contributed to the climate change and environment part of the Governance Review for 2020-21. PAIRVI/MAUSAM has been helping with governance review of climate change and environment part for many years. Governance review organized by WNTA is a comprehensive review of governance, gaps and concrete recommendations and demands covering economic, social and environmental sectors besides, governance, human rights, and democracy. The Review was released in a widely attended consultation on 26th July.
An impressive number of activities were conducted to respond to the situation and make services available to the partners organizations as well as communities. Most activities were though conducted in Bihar, but organizations from Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh also benefitted from these activities. The activities included covid stock take by organizing weekly meetings of the Covid Coordination and Response Committee (with members from Bihar, Jharkhand and MP). The meetings also helped to review, plan and implement a number of activities by partner organizations viz. distribution of emergency kits, food kits, medical assistance, education, help with hospitalization and oxygen etc. Covid Volunteers training (2nd, 13th and 21st June, and 9th July trained more than 100 volunteers for community and emergency response including home based treatment, hospitalization support, further training of volunteers…
HLPF took place in New York during 6th to 15th July. The event was hybrid but majority of the participants participated virtually. Ajay K Jha, represented APRCEM in the MGOS Coordination mechanism which facilitated participation of CSOs from all over the world in the HLPF. Ajay also participated in MGOS CM meetings, Advocacy group Meetings, APRCEM meetings and briefings, a number of side events, bilateral meetings with the delegation of the Korea and Fiji, meetings with the UNDESA, Informal Consultations on the Ministerial Declaration and Strengthening ECOSOC; the High Level Segment of the ECOSOC. He also wrote several analysis and reflection on the Ministerial Declaration, which is the major outcome of the HLPF. Strategic Planning workshop was organized on 25th May, 1st & 8th June. The objective of the workshop was to discuss recommendations from the Evaluation of APRCEM and come up with 3-5 years strategic plan. Approx. 50 participants representing Regional Coordination Committee (RCC) and thematic working group leads participated in the workshop.
PAIRVI leads a Covid response coordination committee formed by partners in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. The campaign was started during April when the situation was extremely bad and people were scared and running in despair. During the period PAIRVI continued to maintain contacts with partners and especially those who were working on covid response. Decision to form a coordination committee was taken on 30th April. Two trainings of volunteers have been organized to engage more than 150 volunteers. Posters, booklets and educational videos have been produced in Hindi on awareness, prevention, counseling, home based care, when to seek medical attention, vaccination and other myths and truths, children and covid etc. A group of doctors are also supporting the committee’s efforts. Ajay K Jha participated in several Meetings including MGFC Meetings (5th April, 11th May, 21st May, 27th May), 154th Meeting of Committee of Permanent Representatives at UNEP (20th May), Cluster Leaders Meeting (14th April, 8th May, 31st May).
PAIRVI is consistently advocating the rights of prisoners. Our partner organization Bandi Adhikar Andolan has filed the PIL in Patna High Court on 12th May 2021(CWJC 10253/2021) demanding immediate release of prisoners. PIL is based on Supreme Court order to decongest the prisons and ensure physical distancing in prison amid COVID-19 Pandemic. The Matter is still pending the Court.
Ajay Jha addressed the closing session of the two days Asia Pacific Youth Forum, which was organized by Major Goup of Children & Youth, YFEED, and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). Fellow speakers included UNEP Director, Asia & the Pacific, ED of the ICIMOD and Food & Agriculture Officer, FAO, and Coordinator, UN DRR.
