Children and Pesticides Awareness Camp, 03-06 August 2022. Children are more susceptible to adverse health effects from exposure to pesticides. These adverse effects constrain the rights of children, unborn children, and future generations to a healthy environment and healthy development. The higher impacts of pesticide in children are due to the ratio between body weight and levels of exposure, as well as the faster development rate of children’s tissues, organs, and biological systems, which make them unable to process and effectively excrete some toxic substances. Pesticide safety plays an important role in protecting children’s health and well being. Regulating and reducing exposure to pesticide is also essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 3 (good health and well-being), SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation), SDG 8…
A number of activities were organized by PAIRVI under the FAO/ITPGR supported project on “Improving Pulse Biodiversity in Rice Fallow Areas of Tribal Belts of Eastern and Central India.” Partners in all 5 states conducted or are in the process of pulses/oilseeds cultivation during the rice fallow season during October to December. Besides, as a part of the Beej Mahotsav, Seed fairs were organized in Madhya Pradesh on 12th November and West Bengal on 28th November. Rest of the states (Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh) will organize seed fair during December. In addition, 3rd Results Report was also submitted to FAO/ITPGR Secretariat.
United Nations Environment Assembly will take place in February 2022 at Nairobi Kenya. Major Groups Facilitating Committee (MGFC) of the UNEP has been preparing through a series of activities towards UNEA. An MGFC International Consultation was organized during 7th to 10th 155th CPR Meeting on 28th September, Annual Sub Committee of the UNEA and CPR Bureau Meeting on 25th October, and MGFC Calls on 15th September, and 27th October were also organized towards the preparation of the UNEA. Ajay K Jha also leads the Food Systems Transformation Track towards the UNEA 5.2 and a meeting was organized on Food systems Transformation on 22nd October.
The Consultation was organized by CECOEDECON, PAIRVI & MAUSAM on 6th August. Afsar Jafri (Grain), Nachiket Udupa & Madhulika (Aasha), Rampal Jat (Kisan Mahasangh) and Justice PC Jain (MAUSAM) spoke on challenges and opportunities for small farmers in the digitalization of Agri and efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture towards it. Nature for Food systems is one of the 7 clusters (building blocks to facilitate UNEA theme, Actions for nature to achieve SDGs) organized by the UNEP towards the preparation of the UNEA 5.2, which will take place (virtually/hybrid/in person) in February, 2022. Ajay K Jha, Regional Facilitator is leading the Food Systems Cluster along with Dr. Angela Wright (World Farmers’ Organization) and Wali Haider (Farmers Major Group). A working group has been set up for taking forward the work of this cluster and had several meetings. A draft concept note has been finalized. A global consultation to will be held in middle of September. Preparatory Meetings were held on 18th and 22nd June and 29th July.
Ajay Jha addressed the closing session of the two days Asia Pacific Youth Forum, which was organized by Major Goup of Children & Youth, YFEED, and Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).
