United Nations Environment Assembly will take place in February 2022 at Nairobi Kenya. Major Groups Facilitating Committee (MGFC) of the UNEP has been preparing through a series of activities towards UNEA. An MGFC International Consultation was organized during 7th to 10th 155th CPR Meeting on 28th September, Annual Sub Committee of the UNEA and CPR Bureau Meeting on 25th October, and MGFC Calls on 15th September, and 27th October were also organized towards the preparation of the UNEA. Ajay K Jha also leads the Food Systems Transformation Track towards the UNEA 5.2 and a meeting was organized on Food systems Transformation on 22nd October.
The 4th Asia Pacific Forum of Ministers and High Officials of Environment was organized by UNEP and Republic of Korea in Suwan, Korea on 5th to 7th October, in which Ajay K Jha, in the capacity of Regional Facilitator, Asia Pacific ensured CSOs participation. He also led the Major Groups Forum on 4th October preceded by regional consultations on 13th and 14th
SDG Moment is a special high voltage leadership event led by UNSG since 2020. Heads of the State are the designated speaker in the Event. MGOS CM managed to get 4 speakers from the MGOS in this SDG Moment, as against none previous year. This year 27 heads of the state participated in the SDG Moment along with heads of UN Agencies, International Institutions and domain experts. A series of meetings were held with Office of the Deputy Secretary General Ms. Amina Mohammed who curates the SDG Moment on 3rd, 10th, and 16th
MGOS organizes a call every second Friday to discuss important issues related to HLPF, SDGS, CM and its members, and any other issues. A number of calls were also organized by the MGOS to follow up on the HLPF during this period. Ajay K Jha organized and participated in the MGOS calls on HLPF Debrief on 16th, 23rd and 30th Meeting with the OHCHR was organized on 13thAugust. He also participated in the meeting of new Co-chairs with UNDESA on 25th August. Regular MGOS CM Calls were organized on 16th and 27th August.
The Forum will be organized in a hybrid mode on 5th to 8th October. Ajay K Jha, Regional Facilitator, AP is the lead to collaborate between UNEP/AP and APRCEM, organize CSOs Forum and ensure facilitation with the Ministerial Forum. A series of activities were organized towards the planning, coordination with UNEP and the host government, Republic of Korea and preparation for the AP CSOs Forum and 4th Ministerial Forum. Prep meetings were held on 14thJune, 9th and 27th July, and 21st, 25th and 28th August.
The workshop was organized by PGSS, a platform of professionals (doctors, engineers, professors, educators, environmentalists etc.) in Maharashtra on 11th August. Ajay K Jha was the key note speaker.
UN RC, India conducted a country analysis on 4th August, in which all major organizations working with the UN were invited. Ajay K Jha, shared major development, climate change and sustainability concerns. The UNRC will develop a country plan based on the inputs received in the meeting.
Nature for Food systems is one of the 7 clusters (building blocks to facilitate UNEA theme, Actions for nature to achieve SDGs) organized by the UNEP towards the preparation of the UNEA 5.2, which will take place (virtually/hybrid/in person) in February, 2022. Ajay K Jha, Regional Facilitator is leading the Food Systems Cluster along with Dr. Angela Wright (World Farmers’ Organization) and Wali Haider (Farmers Major Group). A working group has been set up for taking forward the work of this cluster and had several meetings. A draft concept note has been finalized. A global consultation to will be held in middle of September. Preparatory Meetings were held on 18th and 22nd June and 29th July.
We contributed to the climate change and environment part of the Governance Review for 2020-21. PAIRVI/MAUSAM has been helping with governance review of climate change and environment part for many years. Governance review organized by WNTA is a comprehensive review of governance, gaps and concrete recommendations and demands covering economic, social and environmental sectors besides, governance, human rights, and democracy. The Review was released in a widely attended consultation on 26th July.
HLPF took place in New York during 6th to 15th July. The event was hybrid but majority of the participants participated virtually. Ajay K Jha, represented APRCEM in the MGOS Coordination mechanism which facilitated participation of CSOs from all over the world in the HLPF. Ajay also participated in MGOS CM meetings, Advocacy group Meetings, APRCEM meetings and briefings, a number of side events, bilateral meetings with the delegation of the Korea and Fiji, meetings with the UNDESA, Informal Consultations on the Ministerial Declaration and Strengthening ECOSOC; the High Level Segment of the ECOSOC. He also wrote several analysis and reflection on the Ministerial Declaration, which is the major outcome of the HLPF.
